Overview

The Lee’s Disc experiment determines an approximate value for the thermal conductivity k of a poor conductor, such as glass.

-In this experiment, the disc made of a poor conductor will be placed between a steam chamber and two conductive metal discs made of brass. A steam current is then passed in the steam chamber until the equilibrium is reached (i.e.the temperatures of the good conductivity metal discs become constant).

-Finally, the rate of cooling of the lower brass disk is calculated and the Thermal Conductivity is calculated.

Aim

To determine the thermal conductivity of a bad conductor
(glass) in the form of a disc using Lee’s method.
