Magnet Simulation: Magnetic Moment of a Bar Magnet

General Aim of Magnet Simulation

Determining the magnetic moment of a magnet in a magnetism virtual lab.

Method of Magnet Simulation

Deflection of magnetometer in magnet simulation.

Learning Objectives (ILOs)

  • By the end of magnetic moment experiment, the student should be able to:

  • Explain the operation of the tangent galvanometer through magnet simulation.

  • Set up an experiment to study the magnetic properties of a bar magnet in virtual lab magnetism.

  • Determine the value of the pole strength of a bar magnet in the bar magnet experiment.

Theoretical Background / Context

  • If a bar magnet far from the tangent galvanometer, the only significant magnetic field acting on the magnetized disk will be the horizontal component   of the earth's field H0.
  • Accordingly, if the bar magnet is placed on the meter stick, the resultant field at the center of the magnetometer is the vector sum of both fields. In this case, the magnetic formula is:

Principle of Work

In a magnetism simulation:

  • Adjusting the distance between the center of the bar magnet to the center of the tangent galvanometer to some distances using the magnet virtual lab setup.
  • Recording the deflection angle for both polarities of the magnet on the two sides of the  tangent galvanometer in the virtual magnet lab and virtual lab on magnetism environment through bar magnet simulation.

" PraxiLabs offered my students a chance to actively engage with the material. Instead of watching videos on a topic, they could virtually complete labs and realize the practical applications of class topics. This is a quality alternative to in-person labs."
